A Safe Space for Every Child: Autism Acceptance at Our Salon

April is National Autism Acceptance Month — a time to celebrate and promote inclusion. At Pigtails & Crewcuts Geneva, we’re proud to be more than just a children’s hair salon! We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, sensory-aware space designed with every child in mind.

For many children with autism or sensory sensitivities, a trip to the salon can be overwhelming. The buzz of clippers, the feel of water, or even the sensation of a cape can cause discomfort. That’s why we’ve created an environment where every child can feel comfortable, understood, and celebrated.

What Makes Our Salon a Sensory-Friendly Space?

Compassionate Stylists & Techniques That Support Sensory Sensitivity

Our team is specially trained to work with children of all abilities and backgrounds. We approach every haircut with patience, empathy, and flexibility. Our goal is to minimize stress and maximize comfort — whether that means letting a child stand or move around during the haircut, playing their favorite show, or simply giving them a moment to pause and breathe.

Calm & Kid-Centered Environment

From our cheerful décor to our fun, vehicle-themed styling chairs and friendly staff, everything in our salon is designed to help children feel safe and at ease. We’re mindful of sensory sensitivities and always happy to work with your little one to ensure they feel as comfortable as possible during their haircut. Whether it’s offering toys, fidgets, playing a favorite movie, or blowing bubbles for a fun distraction, we aim to make the experience enjoyable. For kids who may feel overstimulated, we’re more than happy to have them sit on a parent’s lap if that helps them feel secure and supported.

Open Communication with Families

We know that no one knows your child better than you do. We work closely with parents and caregivers to understand individual needs and preferences. Whether it’s your child’s first haircut or their fiftieth, we’ll make the experience as smooth and positive as possible.

Autism Acceptance Month is a meaningful reminder of why we do what we do — and who we do it for. We’re here not just to give haircuts, but to build trust, spark smiles, and create a sense of community.

Creepy Crawly Buns Tutorial

     What You’ll Need

  • Hair elastics
  • Comb
  • Spider rings
  • Hairspray
  • Bobby pins (Optional)
  1. Section the hair – Part your child’s hair down the middle creating two even pigtails. Use a hair elastic to secure one section to the side as you work on the other.

  2. More sections! – Separate a small section at the bottom of your child’s head. Pull the remaining hair away from this section and secure it to be out of the way. Take the small section at the bottom and secure it with a hair elastic. Repeat this process with another section right above the previous section. You should now have two sections of hair secured with elastic bands. Keep creating even sections until you reach the top of your child’s head.

  3. Braiding Upwards – Take the bottom section and begin Dutch braiding upwards towards the top section. Find out how to Dutch Braid here!

  4. Take it to the Top – Once you reach the top of your child’s head, begin to incorporate from the front section of hair with the rest of the braid. Secure with a hair elastic. Finish braiding the rest of the hair, securing the end with a hair elastic. Lightly tug on braid to fluff the hair a bit. finish off each bubble braid with a bun.

Wrap the braid around the top hair elastic to create a bun. Secure the bun with a hair elastic or bobby pins.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the other side.

  5. Make it creepy! – Once you’re happy with the hair placement, loop spider rings through each hair elastic. Finish off your creepy spider hairstyle with hairspray!

What You’ll Need

  • Hair elastics
  • Comb
  • A box of tissues

Use bobby pins to adjust the hair’s placement to your liking. Once you’re satisfied with the look, use hairspray to lock your style in place.

  2. Bring your buns back from the dead – Taking one tissue, place it on top of one of the buns, ensuring that the bun is in the center. Then, use a hair elastic to secure the tissue over the bun, creating a ghost shape. Using your black marker, draw eyes and a mouth to bring your ghost to life! Repeat on the other side to complete your ghoulish style.
