How to Prevent Hair Damage and Promote Hair Growth

Pro Tips : How to Prevent Hair Damage and Promote Hair Growth

Proper care is vital to healthy hair, and it’s important to establish good routines while your children are still little! Here are some easy tips and tricks for how to prevent hair damage and promote hair growth!

1. Instead of towel-drying, use an old t-shirt.

Traditional towels are too rough for your hair and can cause breakage over time. Soft cotton t-shirts are more gentle on your hair, and you can give old t-shirts new life!

2. Dry your hair naturally.

Blow drying your hair is fast and convenient, but excessive heat styling can cause serious damage to your hair and scalp. Save the heat styling for special occasions, and use a good heat protectant! If you absolutely must blow dry your hair, use the lowest heat setting. Aim to use heat tools at most once a week.

3. Wash your hair with lukewarm water.

Hot showers are relaxing, but the hot water can strip the natural protective oils from your hair. Not only does this dry out your hair, but it can dull your hair’s natural shine! To protect your hair’s natural oils, use lukewarm water to wash your hair.

4. Concentrate shampoo on your scalp and conditioner on the ends of your hair.

Shampoo is meant to clear product build-up and oils from your hair, the majority of which is concentrated on your scalp. The water and suds running down your hair when you rinse are enough to clean it— applying shampoo directly to the length and ends of your hair will dry it out. Applying conditioner to your scalp makes your roots too greasy, and you’ll lose volume. Your scalp produces its own natural oils, so it’s best to keep the conditioner on the mid-length to ends of your hair to avoid greasy hair and build-up on your scalp.

5. When you tie your back, keep it loose!

It’s okay to wear your hair tightly pulled back every so often, but for day-to-day styling, you want to keep it loose, as the constant pulling of tight hairstyles can cause your hair to break or fall out. It can even result in a receding hairline if you’re not careful! Additionally, make sure to use hair-safe elastics on your hair.
