For many families with autistic children, something as simple as a haircut can feel overwhelming. The sounds, sensations, and unfamiliar environment can quickly turn stressful. That’s exactly why Pigtails & Crewcuts is designed to be different—a place where kids (and parents) feel supported, understood, and never judged.
We believe in meeting each child where they are. Sometimes that means the first visit isn’t even about a haircut. We’ve welcomed families who come in just to explore—playing at the train table, meeting our stylists, and getting comfortable with the space. One family visited several times before their child was ready. Each time, we gently asked if they felt ready, never pushing. And then one day, it clicked. The child said “yes,” climbed into a themed car chair, and had their first successful haircut. It was a moment filled with pride, joy, and yes—happy tears.
That’s what we’re here for.
At Pigtails & Crewcuts, we work hard to create a judgment-free zone. No pressure. No rushing. No expectations that every child will sit perfectly still. Our stylists are patient, flexible, and experienced with sensory sensitivities—whether that means taking breaks, changing positions, or adjusting our approach entirely.
We also use tools to help children feel more prepared and in control. One favorite is the book Charlie Gets a Haircut, which walks kids through what to expect in a calm, friendly way. Reading it before (or even during) the visit can make a big difference in helping a child feel safe and ready.
We understand that environment matters. If your child needs a quieter, calmer experience, we encourage you to call ahead and request a low-sensory time. We’re happy to work with you to find a time that feels right.
Other ways we support your child:
Gentle, step-by-step introductions to each part of the haircut
Flexibility with seating (lap, standing, or chair)
Distractions and comfort items welcome
Celebrating small wins—because they matter
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the haircut. It’s about building trust, confidence, and positive experiences that grow over time.
Because every child deserves to feel successful—and every parent deserves to feel like the hero.
