December 27, 2019, Atlanta, Georgia — Like many other families, haircuts were once a challenge for Rashell and Jamahl Carmack’s son, Jamahl Jr. However, one conversation with a co-worker not only introduced the Carmacks to a better haircut experience for their son, but also a new business opportunity. The Carmacks are the owners of the recently opened Pigtails & Crewcuts: Haircuts for Kids – Mall of Georgia location in Buford, Georgia.
Jamahl recalls that the topic of haircuts came up one day when talking with his co-worker, who described haircuts as a delightful and joyful experience for his family. Jamahl remembers telling his co-worker “It’s not like that with our son. He will throw up in the chair, have a fit, cry, scream…it’s a disaster.” His co-worker immediately suggested the Carmacks take their son to Pigtails & Crewcuts. Jamahl had never heard of the children’s salon franchise before but was immediately intrigued as his colleague described the salon’s themed chairs and how the approach is really catered to kids with plenty of fun distractions to take a child’s mind off the haircut. Jamahl said “You’re going to have to show me this!”
The Carmacks got the salon’s address and went to the salon for their son’s next haircut. As they waited outside, they thought “This looks like fun!” but their son Jamahl Jr. “still wasn’t having it.” When it was his turn, he didn’t want to get in the chair, so the stylist asked if he wanted to go back outside and wound up cutting Jamahl Jr.’s hair on the bench outside the salon. “That won us as a customer,” the Carmacks explained, sharing that their son grew to love the stylist and they continued going back.
Eventually, the Carmacks moved to a new community but the experience Pigtails & Crewcuts provided was worth it, so they continued to make the drive when their child needed a haircut. One summer day at the salon, both Rashell and Jamahl happened to notice a sign for franchise opportunities from opposite sides of the salon. They were looking to invest in a franchise, but neither had thought of something like Pigtails & Crewcuts. At that moment the idea clicked and the Carmacks knew this was what they were looking for.
Rashell and Jamahl say the process of becoming Pigtails & Crewcuts franchisees has been excellent. As first-time franchisees, they appreciate all the support and family-like atmosphere found within Pigtails & Crewcuts, which Rashell describes as invaluable.
“Not only do we go to them for support, but they check on us to make sure we’re okay,” she explains. “It’s a two-way street. They want to make sure we are successful and that our business thrives.” With full-time jobs outside of the salon, Rashell admits that jumping into this business was a bit overwhelming, but feels they have been able to catch on quickly due to the support the franchise provides.
Now that the salon is open, the Carmacks say it feels a bit surreal but they are excited to bring a much-needed service to such a family-oriented community. “The location is awesome, and we have a great staff! Everyone gets along and they treat it like it’s their own, and that is a blessing,” Rashell shares.
With a great experience under their belts, the Carmacks say this is just the beginning of their journey with the Pigtails & Crewcuts franchise and hope to open more locations in the future. “The wheels are turning and spinning, but no specific location has been decided yet,” Rashell says.
