Haircuts can be challenging for kids. When adding the new reality of wearing a mask and washing your hands more frequently it can be a bigger ordeal. We are taking new measures in our salons to keep everyone healthy and safe. We know how scary it can be for some kids to learn and adapt to these new measures. Pigtails & Crewcuts has developed some tips to help prepare your kiddo for a haircut, so everyone feels more comfortable.
Explain Why You Need to Wear a Mask
Talk to your children about the importance of wearing a mask to help stop the spread of germs. Remind your children that wearing a mask is helping protect themselves as well as others, and that is why their stylist will be wearing a mask, too.
Let Your Child Choose Their Mask
Let your child be a part of choosing their mask so it is something they like. This will help encourage them to wear it. It also gives them a sense of control over the new routine. Look for masks with their favorite characters or make a mask that they can decorate.
Practice Wearing Your Masks Together
For children who might not want to put a mask on, start out by letting them hold a mask and touch it. They can become familiar with how it feels, then progress to putting the mask on and practice wearing it. Try shorter amounts of time at first, and then work your way up to longer periods of time. For example, your child could practice by wearing their mask while putting away their toys, watching a TV show, or reading a book. Make it a family activity so your child knows that we are all in this together. Give your child praise for wearing their mask.
Be Ready to Wash Your Hands
Talk to your child about how germs can live on our hands and spread quickly. Explain to them that keeping our hands clean helps keep all their friends at the salon safe. Help them learn how to wash their hands properly for 30 seconds. Make it fun by singing a little of their favorite song.
Limited Toys for Now
To control the spread of germs, toys may be limited or put away completely in our salons. Explain to your child that this is only temporary. Toys will come back out soon. In the meantime, you can have fun playing with favorite toys at home once their haircut is over. Or bring a favorite small toy he or she can hold during their haircut to keep them entertained.
Expect to Have Fun!
Remind your child that their stylist will make this a fun experience. There will be a few extra safety measures in place to help keep everyone healthy. Tell them that we are all smiling behind our masks and ready to give them a fabulous new ‘do!
